Our Story

Back in 2011, I was helping my sister redecorate her flat in Wakefield. Money was tight, space was even tighter, and we’d spent hours browsing websites, showrooms, and catalogues looking for a decent bed. Everything seemed overpriced, underwhelming, or both.
Eventually, frustrated with the lack of options, we did something that would quietly change the course of my life: we built our own. Not from scratch exactly — we repurposed an old frame, added our headboard design, sourced upholstery fabric from a market in Leeds, and stitched the pieces together over a weekend.
That bed? It looked far better than anything we’d seen online. And it worked. It was simple, stylish, affordable, and — most importantly — made with care.
At the time, I didn’t think I’d just built the prototype of Bedroom King. But looking back, that moment planted a seed that never stopped growing.

An Idea That Refused to Go Away
Over the next few months, word got out. Friends asked me to make beds for their flats. My uncle asked for a custom-sized base. A neighbour wanted a drawer option. There was a demand — but more than that, there was a shared frustration.
Everyone I spoke to seemed to have the same problem:
“Why is it so hard to find a good bed that doesn’t cost a fortune?”
That stuck with me. At the time, I was working full-time in logistics, but I began building beds on weekends. I spent nights researching fabrics, frames, and mechanisms. I learned about Ottoman lifts, slatted bases, and reinforced corners. I started experimenting with frames that could hold up to years of real use — kids jumping on them, people moving house, the odd spilled coffee.
Soon, the garage was full. Then the spare room. Then my mate’s unit across town.

Building Something That Lasts
We officially launched Bedroom King in 2013, with just three models: a standard divan, a velvet ottoman, and a storage bed with drawers.
I remember the first real online sale. It came from Sheffield. A couple had seen one of our Facebook posts and messaged late at night:
“Hi, can you make this in king size with a taller headboard?”
We could. We did.
What followed were months of long days, weekend deliveries, and sourcing locally wherever we could. We didn’t have massive capital, but we had something more valuable: genuine care. Every bed that left our tiny workshop had been built and tested by someone who understood what it was like to live in a real home, with kids, pets, small rooms, and tighter budgets.

Why the Name “Bedroom King”?
Funny story — we didn’t plan to be called Bedroom King. The original name idea was “York Beds Co.”, but it didn’t stick. It sounded a bit too formal. Too forgettable.
One evening, while sketching out ideas with my brother, we joked:
“If we’re making beds fit for royalty, let’s just call it Bedroom King.”
It made us laugh. But the more we said it, the more it worked. It was bold, confident, and a bit cheeky — much like the brand we were trying to build.
We registered the domain that night. And we never looked back.

Quality, Not Quantity
Even as demand grew, we refused to become a warehouse brand that just “shipped boxes.”
We kept our assembly team in-house. We trained each new joiner personally. We built partnerships with UK suppliers — some just down the road — so we could control quality and support local economies.
We made a decision: if something wasn’t right, we’d fix it. No questions. No long waits. Just a real person, on the phone, ready to help. That’s still our promise today.

Collaborations & Community
We’re proud of our British roots, and that pride extends into how we give back and collaborate.
In 2023, we partnered with a local shelter initiative in West Yorkshire to donate 50 beds and mattresses to housing support programs. These weren’t clearance items—they were custom-built for comfort and dignity.
We’ve also collaborated with:
- Independent interior designers to curate headboard trends for our seasonal collections.
- Local upholsterers in Sheffield to train apprentices in traditional techniques.
- British textile innovators to test new eco-conscious fabrics, like recycled polyester blends and plant-dyed linens.
These partnerships help us stay connected to the community and stay ahead of sustainable trends.
