Our Story

Bedroomking

From a Spare Room in Yorkshire to Thousands of Bedrooms Across the UK. Some businesses are born from spreadsheets. Ours started in a small bedroom — quite literally.

Back in 2011, I was helping my sister redecorate her flat in Wakefield. Money was tight, space was even tighter, and we’d spent hours browsing websites, showrooms, and catalogues looking for a decent bed. Everything seemed overpriced, underwhelming, or both.

Eventually, frustrated with the lack of options, we did something that would quietly change the course of my life: we built our own. Not from scratch exactly — we repurposed an old frame, added our headboard design, sourced upholstery fabric from a market in Leeds, and stitched the pieces together over a weekend.

That bed? It looked far better than anything we’d seen online. And it worked. It was simple, stylish, affordable, and — most importantly — made with care.

At the time, I didn’t think I’d just built the prototype of Bedroom King. But looking back, that moment planted a seed that never stopped growing.

An Idea That Refused to Go Away

Over the next few months, word got out. Friends asked me to make beds for their flats. My uncle asked for a custom-sized base. A neighbour wanted a drawer option. There was a demand — but more than that, there was a shared frustration.

Everyone I spoke to seemed to have the same problem:

“Why is it so hard to find a good bed that doesn’t cost a fortune?”

That stuck with me. At the time, I was working full-time in logistics, but I began building beds on weekends. I spent nights researching fabrics, frames, and mechanisms. I learned about Ottoman lifts, slatted bases, and reinforced corners. I started experimenting with frames that could hold up to years of real use — kids jumping on them, people moving house, the odd spilled coffee.

Soon, the garage was full. Then the spare room. Then my mate’s unit across town.

Building Something That Lasts

We officially launched Bedroom King in 2013, with just three models: a standard divan, a velvet ottoman, and a storage bed with drawers.

I remember the first real online sale. It came from Sheffield. A couple had seen one of our Facebook posts and messaged late at night:

“Hi, can you make this in king size with a taller headboard?”

We could. We did.

What followed were months of long days, weekend deliveries, and sourcing locally wherever we could. We didn’t have massive capital, but we had something more valuable: genuine care. Every bed that left our tiny workshop had been built and tested by someone who understood what it was like to live in a real home, with kids, pets, small rooms, and tighter budgets.

Why the Name “Bedroom King”?

Funny story — we didn’t plan to be called Bedroom King. The original name idea was “York Beds Co.”, but it didn’t stick. It sounded a bit too formal. Too forgettable.

One evening, while sketching out ideas with my brother, we joked:

“If we’re making beds fit for royalty, let’s just call it Bedroom King.”

It made us laugh. But the more we said it, the more it worked. It was bold, confident, and a bit cheeky — much like the brand we were trying to build.

We registered the domain that night. And we never looked back.

Growing with Our Customers

By 2016, we’d outgrown our first unit. Then our second. What started with a few beds a month turned into a few beds a day, then dozens. We hired more staff — most from local families, friends, and referrals.

We didn’t just grow in size. We grew in understanding.

We started noticing patterns:

  • Young couples needed extra storage without compromising on looks.
  • Older customers wanted no-fuss assembly and firm support.
  • Families needed durability and easy-to-clean fabrics.

This shaped how we designed our beds. Every headboard was tweaked. Every drawer runner was tested. We even adjusted fabric shades after one customer told us her grey bed looked “a little too blue in sunlight.” These weren’t complaints — they were insights. We listened, and we improved.

Quality, Not Quantity

Even as demand grew, we refused to become a warehouse brand that just “shipped boxes.”

We kept our assembly team in-house. We trained each new joiner personally. We built partnerships with UK suppliers — some just down the road — so we could control quality and support local economies.

We made a decision: if something wasn’t right, we’d fix it. No questions. No long waits. Just a real person, on the phone, ready to help. That’s still our promise today.

The Pandemic Years: A True Test

When COVID hit, the world paused. But people still needed beds. They needed them more than ever — for comfort, for home offices, for kids growing faster than expected.

We worked with a skeleton crew and kept operations safe. We took thousands of calls from customers stuck at home. We adapted quickly, launching new delivery options, sourcing additional fabrics when supply chains failed, and expanding our online support.

It wasn’t easy. But it reminded us why we exist: to bring comfort, quality, and honesty into people’s homes.

What Bedroom King Means Today

We’re no longer just a Yorkshire startup, but we still think like one. We still obsess over feedback. We still test every new model. We still argue (in a good way!) over fabric shades and drawer depth.

We’ve helped thousands of people across the UK get a better night’s sleep, make more space in their homes, and feel good about where they spend one-third of their lives.

And we’re not done yet.

Product Deep Dive

  • Cream Ottoman Storage Bed Frame made by Bedroomking

    Ottoman Beds

Our ottoman beds are the best-selling models for a reason. In modern UK homes where space is tight and storage is precious, our lift-up ottoman frames offer a practical and beautiful solution.

Each gas-lift mechanism is reinforced to support daily use. Customers often ask: “Will this last for years?” Our answer is simple — yes, because we build them to.

Instead of thin particleboard bases, we use solid wood or reinforced boards. We also offer both front-lift and side slider designs, depending on room layout.

    Popular finishes:

    • Plush Velvet in silver, steel, and mink
    • Naples Fabric for a matt, clean look
    • Crushed Velvet for customers who want glamour

Every ottoman is made to order, allowing you to choose the size, headboard, and finish that best suits your home.

  • Divan Bed

Divan bases are classic for a reason. Ours features durable timber frames, optional drawers, and solid platform tops. Unlike flatpack bases from budget brands, Bedroom King divans come pre-built in sections for easier delivery and longer life.

    Why people love them:

    • Great for guest rooms and smaller spaces
    • Optional storage drawers that don’t compromise design
    • Compatible with all Bedroom King headboards

These are the workhorses of our range—simple, stylish, and built to last.

Collaborations & Community

We’re proud of our British roots, and that pride extends into how we give back and collaborate.

In 2023, we partnered with a local shelter initiative in West Yorkshire to donate 50 beds and mattresses to housing support programs. These weren’t clearance items—they were custom-built for comfort and dignity.

We’ve also collaborated with:

  • Independent interior designers to curate headboard trends for our seasonal collections.
  • Local upholsterers in Sheffield to train apprentices in traditional techniques.
  • British textile innovators to test new eco-conscious fabrics, like recycled polyester blends and plant-dyed linens.

These partnerships help us stay connected to the community and stay ahead of sustainable trends.

Where We’re Headed Next

As we grow, our mission remains the same: build better beds, honestly.

Why Bedroom King Is Built to Last

In a market saturated with fast furniture and fleeting trends, Bedroom King stands for longevity—in our builds, our service, and our values.

We aren’t trying to sell the most beds. We’re trying to sell the ones that matter most to you. Whether that’s a chic velvet frame for your first home, a sturdy divan for the kids’ room, or a custom piece for an unusual layout, our team is ready to build it with care.

We listen. We adapt. We evolve. And we do it all without losing sight of the Yorkshire workshop where it began.

Because at the end of the day, we’re not just in the business of beds. We’re in the business of better sleep, better homes, and better choices.

From our family to yours—thank you for making Bedroom King part of your story.
